Bakken North Dakota Oil

Probably every investor has heard about the oil in the Bakken area of North Dakota and Montana. It may not be much in the news anymore, but companies are still discovering a lot of oil there, and the rig count for drilling has doubled since last winter. It is estimated that we have billions of barrels of oil that can be pumped out. The companies which have the best wells will be making hundreds of millions of dollars even if oil stays around $75 per barrel.

How do you know what companies are worthwhile for investment? Clustergains.com has a page with links to North Dakota's resource department where you can find out exactly what is happening in North Dakota, and you can invest accordingly. The state has an outstanding website which tracks the oil companies and well progress in North Dakota. For example, one table shows the active drillers in the state. Another table shows all the oil wells and which companies are drawing oil from them. Three of the best companies there are Brigham Exploration, Continental Resources, and Whiting Oil. Clustergains.com can help you find the answers for investing in Bakken area oil companies.

Economic Indicators

One of the best ways to know whether you should be in or out of the stock market is to watch the economic indicators. ClusterGains.com has a page on indicators with a link to the Conference Board where you can see a graph of how the economy is doing. If the chart is flat or down instead of going up, it may be a good time to sit on the sidelines rather than being invested in the stock market.

Housing starts and sales is another good indicator of how the economy is doing. Clustergains has another page with links to housing statistics such as housing starts, new home sales, and existing home sales. If the building industry is not advancing, stocks will probably not go up either.

Large Volume Spikes

One of the clearest indications that a stock is set to rise occurs when the daily volume spikes four to ten times higher than normal. This is especially true if the volume was previously low. The volume spike is like a skyscraper in the desert. It means that institutions or rich individuals are highly interested in the stock.

A huge volume spike shows that more buying and stock price increases are on the way. Brigham Exploration was such a stock in 2009. The company has large oil deposits up north near Canada in the Bakken area. The stock has risen over ten times from $1 to $13 in 2009. A large volume spike in May was the clue that it had a lot more room to run when it was around $3 per share.
